Summary We estimate India-Somalia plate motion at 45 times since 60 Ma from ?9,000 crossings of Carlsberg and northern Central Indian Ridge magnetic reversals C1 to C26 numerous fracture zone crossings. Bayesian noise-reduction in Arabia/Somalia and Nubia/Arabia finite rotations since ~20 Ma: Implications for Nubia/Somalia relative motion
Knowledge of Nubia/Somalia relative motion since the Early Neogene is of particular importance in the Earth Sciences, because it (i) impacts on inferences on African dynamic topography; and (ii) allows us to link plate kinematics within the Indian realm with those within the Atlantic basin. The contemporary Nubia/Somalia motion is well known from geodetic observations. Precise estimates of the ...
متن کاملMotion and rigidity of the Pacific Plate and implications for plate boundary deformation
[1] Using up to 11 years of data from a global network of Global Positioning System (GPS) stations, including 12 stations well distributed across the Pacific Plate, we derive present-day Euler vectors for the Pacific Plate more precisely than has previously been possible from space geodetic data. After rejecting on statistical grounds the velocity of one station on each of the Pacific and North...
متن کاملPresent-day plate motion constraint on mantle rheology and convection
Large-scale mantle convection, to first order, is a system driven by interior density anomalies, modulated by variable plate thickness and extreme theology variations at the top of the mantle. The rheological difference between oceanic and continental regions significantly influences the surface velocity. We apply a three-dimensional NewtonJan viscous flow model to explain the largescale presen...
متن کاملRole of mantle flow in Nubia-Somalia plate divergence
Present-day continental extension along the East African Rift System (EARS) has often been attributed to diverging sublithospheric mantle flow associated with the African Superplume. This implies a degree of viscous coupling between mantle and lithosphere that remains poorly constrained. Recent advances in estimating present-day opening rates along the EARS from geodesy offer an opportunity to ...
متن کاملChaotic motion of a bimetallic circular plate
Considering the effect of geometric nonlinearity and uniformly distributed time-varying temperature, the bifurcation behaviors and chaotic phenomena of a bimetallic thin circular plate are investigated. First of all, the nonlinear dynamic equation for bimetallic plate is established and further reduced to Duffing equation of harmonic parametric excitation, from which the pitchfork bifurcation p...
